Customers can order and receive the delivery of groceries, pantry items fresh produce, deli products, meats, dairy organic and natural food as well as prepared meals, office and school products, personal care items and alcohol in specific markets. Customers can also pick up orders at more than 200 Peapod pickup locations, the majority of which are attached to Ahold USA-owned brick and mortar stores, such as Stop & Shop.

Peapod uses the data it collects to identify the brands and products that customers like, and allows them to recommend similar items. The system allows shoppers to look through all items in their shopping cart at once and to make use of filters to narrow down results. Because grocery shopping is a habit-driven activity, the Skokie, Illinois-based company makes use of data to predict which products the shopper would buy, pushing these items towards the top of the list.

The drivers who are known as brand ambassadors, are a key aspect of the service. "Food is emotionally charged," Bienkowski told Food Dive, and being able to interact with the person who brings customers their food makes the experience more enjoyable and convenient. When customers see their groceries delivered by the driver they know that the order is safe with the driver.

Peapod as an early pioneer in online grocery shopping, has invested in technology to ensure that it can remain competitive with its competitors. It hasn't had as big of an impact on the industry as other delivery services for groceries like Instacart or Amazon Fresh. But the 28-year veteran of the online grocery delivery wars is trying to increase its competitiveness by expanding its online shopping options. It recently launched a new mobile shopping experience built on its proprietary PRISM platform on its own websites and also the sites of its parent company, Ahold Delhaize USA.
