Which is Best For Online Grocery Shopping?

Many online grocers offer high-quality products at prices that might out-perform the typical grocery store. To determine which one is best, I tested a few well-known services to find those that offer the best brands, a variety of products and fair prices with a convenient pick-up or delivery options.

One of the most important aspects of online shopping is planning your list and claiming a delivery timelot before spots fill up. You'll also have to be flexible with your choices based on the availability of items.

1. Instacart

The online grocery delivery service allows you to place an order via a mobile app or website creating a virtual shopping cart that is then fulfilled by a personal shopper on a particular day. Instacart works with over 1,400 local, national, and regional retail banners across North America to deliver products from 80,000+ locations. There are membership-only stores, such as Costco or Sam's Club.

Instacart's costs include a $2.99 same-day delivery fee and an additional $3.99 service fee (plus tips for the customer). These fees are similar to those you'll encounter with ordering at your regular grocery store, but you don't have to worry about parking, driving, and standing in line to pay. Instacart offers an annual membership for customers who shop at least 14 times per year. This will reduce your costs for service and delivery fees.

If you're worried about grocery costs, Hindert suggests price-shopping before adding items to your cart. Instacart allows you to add specific prices and nutritional facts to your list so you can compare prices and ingredients with those of the items you already have in your cart. You can also create a "shoppable list" using the Instacart application. This is helpful for future grocery shopping trips.

However, Hindert warns that using Instacart to purchase groceries might not be as effective as shopping yourself since it can result in impulse purchases. In addition grocery delivery services do not always offer the same in-store sales that you'd discover at your local grocery store.

2. Amazon Grocery

Amazon Grocery lets customers have their groceries delivered right to their doorstep. The items are delivered from local Amazon warehouses by couriers, or at a designated location. The service offers same-day or next-day delivery. Amazon provides a variety of grocery items, including fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meats and seafood frozen food, packaged food and household items.

Amazon Grocery has become one of the most sought-after services for grocery shopping, and with good reason. Its focus on the weekly food shopping trip, affordable price and carefully curated selection place it directly in competition with traditional supermarkets, Brick Meets Click's Bishop stated. "Grocers that aren't recognizable in these areas are the most vulnerable to Amazon Grocery," he added.

To encourage more frequent and more substantial grocery purchases within its Prime membership, Amazon has introduced a range of new perks including unlimited delivery of groceries. This will allow the company to establish itself as an all-in-one store for many of its customers' everyday needs.

Another way Amazon is attempting to draw customers to its grocery stores is through its merchandising ideas. This allows shoppers to have a more authentic experience at the grocery store and builds loyalty.
